If you’ve seen our ads, you’ve probably seen the grandma installing solar. It’s satirical, illustrating the relative ease of solar installation. Our ads have received millions of views and have helped us expose the wrongs of the traditional solar industry.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) report, the average price for rooftop solar is $3.95/watt. Project Solar comes in at an average price of $2/watt (fully installed, before incentives), making our offer nearly HALF the price.

Current Incentives

The federal government recognizes the external benefits of home owners going solar. The current incentive gives 26% of the total purchase price back to the consumer in the form of a tax deduction.

This incentive brings the total Project Solar price to an average of $1.50/watt. The current federal incentives are set to expire in 2022, however, some states also offer additional incentives.

The Industry Before Project Solar

Here’s a some detail on how the industry currently works. There are companies commonly referred to as EPCs (Engineering, Procurement of Equipment, Contracted Labor). These companies will install solar for about $2.20/watt on behalf of the salesmen, but they don't sell themselves. Instead, they let doorknockers do the selling, allowing them to keep anything over the $2.20/watt they charge. The doorknockers are literally incentivized to charge as much as possible, resulting in a national average of $3.95/watt.

With the average solar install being 9kW (9,000 watts), it’s not hard to calculate the average commission… 9000*1.75 = $15,750, less any lender fees.

Does this make you mad? It makes US mad…

Although the sales tactics are predatory and unethical, that doesn’t mean that solar is a bad investment. Quite the contrary.

If properly priced, solar can save you a LOT of money.

Here’s an example - A 10kW system from Project Solar, with full service installation, would cost $14,824.67 after incentives. It will produce on average 48kWh a day. If you multiply this by 365 days a year and 25 years (the warranty period), and factor in an average of 92.5% for degradation, you would have 48*365*25*.925 = 405,150kWh produced. If you divide the system price by the kWh produced, you would have a total cost per kWh of 3.7¢/kWh. The average cost per kWh in the Unites States, from traditional electric utility companies, is 13¢/kWh.

In other words, when priced FAIRLY, your solar build should pay for itself 3.5 times over, over the 25 year period. AND, it should keep producing for many years after that.
